I just woke up and near two years has passed since a good friend bought me a domain name and suggested I write a blog. Well time has flown by and no blog and out of nowhere there have been sign’s so long story short I’m now writing my blog, Duane’s World Music and musings from the world of Duane!
So what is going on in Duane’s World?
Plenty, between playing gigs and hopping into different studio’s about the place I am kept busy. I have been working with different songwriters and artists some of which include Newsunsethotel and Perry Blake on different project’s they are involved in. This an exciting and ear opening time for me, from indie to pop and country to ball’s out rock Duane’s World is turning into a tasty dish with many flavor’s for a curious palate!
I have also been learning about working with other’s in a studio environment. I think music can sometime’s be a solitary role and when working with other’s social skill’s can do with a little dusting, that coupled with a songwriter’s attachment to their work and a wary eye for the editing side of production. Because I have worked in a few different genre’s of late I have learned to respect the attitude’s of other but also to have a voice in the heat of the creative process, There’s no incense burning or Chakra’s been opened where I’ve been working! Patience, understanding and contribution come to mind, a side I don’t often show in a sustainable way at least, maybe it’s because I’ve found my role as a musician and I am this person when I’m honest……Did I just have an epiphany?! I am loving Duane’s World right now.
Sadly this month one of my Idol’s passed away and it had quite an effect on me. Gary Moore died at 58 year’s of age in his sleep. Why was I so sad? Well some of his music was the soundtrack of my youth, my teen years to be more specific and now he’s gone. I was only listening to some questionable recording’s that a man had taken at a live concert in Sweden and Gary was on form. He had returned to his Celtic Rock era and was playing heart and soul so I was gearing up all excited to see him again, even though the quality of the recording’s weren’t great it still gave me shivers to hear him play. He was an icon, and bridge between the north and the south in Ireland saying in one of his songs
When I came across the border I was following my nose, Dublin City ’69 there could have been no better place there was no better time
He had a huge influence on Irish rock music during his time in Thin Lizzy and went on to have a successful solo career recording and performing with man of the blue’s greats. It’s funny how someone you have never met can have a lasting emotional impact on you. His music was there when it was needed like a good friend so as a result I have been drawn back to my guitar ferociously, I can’t put it down playing along to his songs!
I haven’t enjoyed playing in such a long time and it’s really bringing the best out of me, R.I.P Gary Moore.
So into the week I go, I’m giving a friend a guitar lesson which I haven’t done in some time so that should be interesting, The studio for some pop guitar tracks, Gig’s and perhaps a trip to the local yoga spot, God know’s I could do with but that’s another rant!

Well here I am phew having finished a few tunes and I am in great form about them! The recording process was far more enjoyable than i have previously experienced and the results are comfortable for my first go at ‘home recording’. I am still working away on more songs and hope to upload as many as I can in the next couple of weeks and also……..drum rolllllllllllllllllllllllll My First E.P!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! will be available followed shortly by a live gig somewhere in Sligo and I would warmly welcome any suggestions as to where I could debut this material live??!! In the meantime Electric Picnic awaits and Sligo Live as im really looking forward to seeing Martha Wainwright and all other performers who pull on the heart strings.
As I mentioned it in my last post the Sligo Music Scene(SMS!) is currently cooking, I had the pleasure of seeing The Oddsocks, Red Brick House and arrived late back from a trip and missed Big Box and Burning Shades (sorry guys) and…. ALL UNDER ONE ROOF! Kellys in Strandhill.
These are the guys causing a stir and giving Sligonian’s and all who are interested a taste in live original music. But real thanks must be given to the music lovers who come to the gigs to support the bands without them its just like band rehearsal! So to all y’all who are finding it hard to peel yerselves off the couch or Facebook for that matter get yer ass’ out to the local venue and support the supporters as well as the bands. This creative rise in Sligo’s Contempary Music Scene Keeps the fires burning for all invloved. Why should i mention all this? well i have a stake in all this, i love music and i love Sligo, the gigs are where im happiest, Its hot, Loud and there’s people playing there hearts out and you wanna be part of that and i want to also support so i am supported when i play!!!
There is nothing worse than bands who are discouraged by a poor turn out at gigs and whats funny enough is that a lot of the pub gigs round town are free………………..!!!!!!!! I see a steady rise in the scene here and it could nt come at a better time when shit is looking Gloomy, and theres nothing better than listening to tunes either at home or in the local having a brew.
Also with the explosion of Social Media and Networking wouldn’t it be great if anyone worldwide for example ‘tweets’ #sligo and discovers a musician/band/performer/artist/singer as opposed to what ever usual story would make the headlines, The world is that bit smaller now and a ‘Creative’ needs not be so anxious about getting out there physically but maybe getting out ther fibre-optically! So to all performers and supporters there is no gigs without each others help! Hope to chat soon and thanks for Reading and Listening

A short note on the progress of new tunes as its been a while since ive posted new music or news on Myspace. Ive been recording a number of tunes of late, some new and some old. The new ones are a real buzz and im enjoying the process of home recording, its a real challenge figuring out the in’s n out’s of recording software and the results one can produce without outside influence! The older songs that im recording i wrote with some of my bandmates from the ‘LEGACY’ days and its great to discover the roots of my love of metal and its sub-genres.
My Plan is to play a local gig to air this new material, a showcase of the old days(some material which was never performed live) and the new songs that are as fresh as a newly dug grave or bread ( whichever school of thought you come from)! All this married with my love of local bands in Sligo and the support of music lovers, When i played with ‘LEGACY’ Adrian Murren, Ronaldo Conlon, Les Jones and Caleb Gilmartin Sligo was a very different place, there was not as much goin on and we certainly wern t as affluent as the last decade but not as surrounded by unease as we are as a country now.
There was fire in those gigs, real belief in the metal covers we played and our originals, The people who came to those gigs fueled our fire and added to my love of music to this day. It is my hope that when i air these songs some of that spirit will be there and it adds to the Sligo music scene that is already exploding with the likes of The Oddsocks Revival, Red Brick House, Big Box etc. Now more than ever we need an entertainment scene to enjoy and let go of the false bullshit economy and its spread of materialism. I love seeing artists of all kind floating around Sligo Taking photos, Painting, Busking, performing and emanating creativity.
I think the creative streak in everyone allows us to be free of whatever trouble we believe ourselves to be in, So i want to chip in to the scene for my own joy but also others who (if they enjoy the music!) want to come along and have a blast at a gig, Hope to see ye soon! Duane
