It’s really been far too long since I’ve taken time to write here or otherwise, so for my own notch keeping I’m saying back…not that I really left. I suppose I turned down the volume for a while. So here’s Rackhouse Pilfer!

Grace Parks

For the past couple of months I have been working with an amazing bunch of people on the Grace Parks project.

The brainchild of one of my favourite Irish Artist’s Perry Blake and another amazing musician/songwriter Glen Garrett, This is an exciting and new fresh pop project with an edgy/alt sound and feel. It’s been an amazing few months of arrangements and Jam’s! The future is looking bright and I gotta say the standard is high which would be expected of an artist such as Blake who hail’s from Sligo!

The lead singer is Grainne Mc Carthy who has her own unique tone and character and is also known locally as a superb vocalist and Eddie Delaney on drums who is a powerhouse yet has the timing of a metronome yet funk feel and you gotta love that. We played the Demons Festival in Dromahair as a test for a live show and the response has been great, Im really looking forward to seeing it on the road and I ‘d encourage  a listen, do enjoy and leave some feedback!

Summer’s here….

Well Summer is here….

Rain,  Sun, Rain, Sun, But I don’t mind because it feels like home to me. I don’t mind the rain every now and then, It makes the sunshine more special. So i hit The Temple House Festival in Sligo as I was playing with the amazing http://www.myspace.com/redbrickhouse and it was a total washout! The gig was great but the attendance was poor for most bands.I heard it was an increase in ticket price’s, the weather, Sea Sessions had a better line up, who knows but I think people who didn’t attend lost out big time! What a great festival. There was some amazing music, a beautiful arts trail and the grounds alone ooze history:

There was a medevial/viking village, Children’s activite’s, poetry, arabian dancing, art works/piece’s and all hidden in the woods! It was a real treat. I had heard about temple house and did a little reading after the second night of the festival when I got home to a comfy bed! (cheater)!

So apart from a great music festival and beautiful art this was all on the site of a Knights Templar Ruin, Such History and you can feel it on the grounds, also the sam family The Perceval’s have owned and maintained this beautiful site, Do read up on this, Im hopoing to book a room in the fab Georgian house for the night : http://www.templehouse.ie/

I’ll be back next with new’s  of my first free downloadable single, so excited…….

Well I’ve been laying down track’s with these lad’s, good friend’s and great musician’s!

It’s went real smooth so far, dulcet tone’s to say the least. It’s bluegrass/country based with a little bit of rolling stone’s attitude which makes the recording process….. colorful!

I’ll be posting some tracks soon, with guy’s permission of course!

Well, As I mentioned to myself and anyone who’s following I was working on putting together a live show for this summer and the goal was to have ten songs……DONE!

I’m happy out having achieved that and I’ll have a song available for free download in the next few weeks and a video to accompany that, exciting times,  So I may be calling on friends and family for some help on and offline to help with the “sharing” of the song/video and making of the video. I know there are plenty of creative people around Sligo town with time on their hands so If your willing and able throw some idea’s, I’ll gladly return the favour!

Hi ho, back to work I go!

Ten tunes!

I’ve been set a task of late to finish ten songs for a few summer shows and a new band. I’m loving it. I’m up on eight songs and counting and I also have some great musician’s one of which is Sean O Reilly who is amazing and was Pat Mc Manus’ drummer for sometime, That helps because I love Pat’s playing!!! I’ll also be joined by Sean’s younger brother Ciaran on bass…..It’s starting to remind me of Van Halen.

My head is pretty much down apart from walking the beautiful beach in Strandhill, I have been putting in hour’s yet I’m not stressed about the outcome, It’s simply writing. I’ve always been “bogged” down with the eternal search for the perfect mix rendering myself helpless as it’s a ridiculous quest! Not only is it tune’s I’m working on it’s also a live show, I don’t want to play gig’s, I want people to see a show with a beginning, middle and end so they walk away entertained and coming up with this has been nothing short of exhilarating!

It’s been nuts, mental busy. Between moving house, learning new songs, learning guitar playing styles and simple funk licks, balancing a chaotic social life and somewhere in the middle dreaming this has been a hectic few weeks……I wouldn’t have it any other way…..okay, I would!

Normally I would have been practicing guitar solo’s and lead parts which I love but knee deep in an “edgy pop” project I have found myself meditating  on the most simplistic guitar parts which are to be honest far more challenging. It seem’s there’s more room for error. However the buzz I’m getting from listen to classic pop and funk to discover the building block’s of songs is great! It’s so simple but man you gotta nail it bigtime and when you do it just get’s head’s moving. First of all I’ll say Rick James is where I am at right now and he is filthy funky! Such grooves! You can’t help but dance. Although the mounting pressure of different project’s was just about manageable it has reworked my angle as a guitar player…and in just one week!

So in the middle of all this it was my brother’s birthday and I went to meet him with some friends in Limerick city and we had a blast! Not only was the city vibrant (due to the match) but there was a very relaxed buzz about the place, I was totally recharged being there. The media give’s it quite a slating but again and time has proven it’s mostly in certain area’s the government tends to ignore. I took a spin to Moyross and it was like entering  another world, a place where few want to go, again people fear what they don’t understand. Horse’s and kid’s playing around was all I seen but I was told I hadn’t seen the worst parts. Every built up area in a class system has “ghetto’s” It’s a monetary problem a massive divide between rich and poor and fuck me isn’t there quite a line drawn in this country. I often wonder about bankers who crippled the country walking free as criminal’s and young ” delinquent ‘s” are brought to court for minor or major crimes that effect a small part of the community, I mean think of the effect a handful of bankers’s and politicians have had on all the happiness and well being of the people in this country?!

So I arrived back in Sligo refreshed having been in deep thought(and dancing) about Limerick beautiful and relaxing while also being dark I felt it time to dive back into the funk/pop licks and get moving, I’m walking this stuff now in my head. When I went to learn new tune’s they fell into place I just knew where the right notes went and what kind of phrasing to use and I just twigged it, I’ve gone back to my youth! I grew up on Michael Jackson, David Bowie and The Police to name but a few and that was proper pop. I even found myself listening to Bruno Mar’s and an old voice in my head (one that sounded like a  metal fan in bruxelles, Dublin) saying ” sellout ” but  I’m like cooking this stuff, It is brilliant, It’s like a golden era of pop again! Amazing writer’s like Lady Gaga, and Bruno are really getting me going what can I say I’m going through a mish mash of Pop/Rock n Funk…I always knew I was a pop fan trapped in a rock fan’s body!
